Essential Oils for Kids

In my house it seems that as soon as one kid gets over a cold, the other gets one.  If you are like me, you want to find the fastest way to help your children get over the cold and start feeling better.  I have found numerous essential oils for kids that help them get over their colds and also help them cope with the symptoms.

First, I want you to know all the safety precautions that should be considered when using essential oils on children.

  • Before you use any essential oil on your child, do a skin test first.  Simply place a small amount of essential oil on their skin (arm, leg) and watch the area closely over a few hours.  If any indication of irritation or rash appears, you will know that your child has as allergic reaction to the oil.
  • Oils should be used in moderation.  When using essential oils on kids, the key idea that “less is more”
  • Essential oils are for external use only.  Keep the oils away from eyes, noses and mouths.

The main essential oil that I use when dealing with colds is Eucalyptus.  Eucalyptus will help with sore throats, coughs, nasal congestion and the aches and pains that come with colds.  I apply the Eucalyptus oil neat by placing a few drops in my hands, rubbing them together and then applying the oil to their chests and backs.  Many nights that would be spent coughing, are spent sleeping through the night.

Peppermint essential oil will work as a fever reducer as it creates a cooling effect.  The Peppermint will also help with congestion and aches and pains.  essential oils for kids

Lavender will help your children sleep.  The more restful sleep they get, the faster their bodies will be able to fend of the germs.

Tea Tree essential oil is anti-bacterial.  I apply Tea Tree to their feet to allow it to attack the bacterial that comes along with cold and flus.

Not only can you use these essential oils on their own, you can also blend them with others to create an amazing recipe to rid yourself of the cold, here is my favorite blend:

  • 2 drops of Thyme + 2 drops of Tea Tree + 1 drops of Eucalyptus + 3 drops of Lemon.

You can mix these essential oils up and apply them neat to their chest, back and feet.  You can also add the blend to unscented lotion.  Either way you decide to apply the blend, you will see that the benefits are amazing!!

You can find other blend recipes to suit your needs here.

I hope you find that the essential oils listed above will help you relieve your children and yourself of the symptoms of a cold.  I know that they have helped me in many ways throughout the years, and they are the first thing I recommend to a someone that is fed up with over-the-counter medications.  Give them a try, you will not be disappointed.
